General Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt-Rivers (1827-1900) collected weaponry before his inheritance in 1880. He eventually amassed collections that ranged from European paintings to Benin bronzes. The General pioneered the science of archaeology and the Pitt-Rivers Museum was founded with his ethnological collections. The art collection documented in this album has been dispersed, although until 1964 the family kept most of the collections in a private museum open to the public at Farnham, Dorset. The General's grandson, Captain George Pitt-Rivers, began to sell off parts of the collection in the 1950s and dispersal was complete by 1970.

1 album (330 photoprints) ; 43 x 54 cm.
